Almost everyone has an opinion on the highly controversial topic of abortion, and the debate continues into 2018. Vice President Mike Pence suggested at a lunch hosted by the anti-abortion organization, the Susan B. Anthony List and Life Institute, that laws that ban abortion could come once again.

I wanted to put my two cents into the discussion of whether or not abortion is a “good” or “bad” thing. Personally, I am pro choice. I know that might be a unpopular opinion to some, but I am. I have never seen abortion as a horrible, horrible thing that some women have done. In my mind it’s their choice, their body, their rules. It never made sense to me that a woman who has had an abortion that you don’t know, and you don’t know her reasons for doing so, makes people look down on her and see her as worthless. She could’ve had many reasons for doing so, but no one ever cares to hear that side of the story. There are so many reasons women even consider it, from health issues, all the way to something as money. People try to make it seem as abortion is an “easy” choice, but to all the women who have or have considered it, it is not. Do not try to belittle someone just because you don’t want to understand their thinking.

People that know nothing feel like they know the right choice even though they’ve never been in that position. These same people also want to ignore the fact that these kids will most likely end up in the overcrowded foster system, or have a hard home life. People care so much about the child before it’s born, but they don’t care about it afterwards. Why don’t people care about the child afterwards? If its truly something they are against, why don’t they try to help make a difference instead of sending another child to become a ward of the state.

The fact that politics is overly involved in this topic is absurd. Who is the government to tell someone what they can and can’t do with their own body? Why isn’t there an outcry over tattoos then, people are “ruining” their body all the time, and since many people know the right choice, why isn’t it against the law? All in all, the point I’m trying to get across is that it’s your body, your rules. People shouldn’t be told what they are and aren’t allowed to do with their bodies, especially from politicians. In my home state of Arizona, lawmakers are actually contemplating a bill that would require women to disclose why they want to get an abortion, something that is a complete violation of privacy. I hope to one day see a world where politics play no part in such a topic like this. Unless you’ve been in that same position that millions of women around the world face, no one deserves to take that right away from them.
