One of the most historic awards shows to date has happened here in America this past week. The 75th Golden Globe Awards were held in Beverly Hills, California, on January 7th, 2018. Several iconic events took place that have sparked debate and brought to light topics that have remained secret for far too long. From the women of Hollywood coming forward to support and empower female sexual assault victims to Oprah Winfrey’s  “Presidential Campaign Worthy” acceptance speech, this year’s awards were extremely important to history and the future.

Last Monday, celebs attending the awards took the red carpet wearing all black for the nationwide #MeToo campaign. This movement consists of those who desire to denounce sexual assault and encourage victims to use their voices and speak out. Many celebrities spoke about why this is so important. Actress Emma Watson explained the significance of coming together, saying, “Understanding our differences makes a huge huge difference, and there’s so much to be done.” Meryl Streep told us why they were taking a stand as she said, “We’re drawing a thick black line between yesterday and tomorrow.”

Oprah Winfrey ended the night with her “New Day on the Horizon” acceptance speech after winning the Cecil B. Demille Award. Her empowering speech resulted in many believing, or at least hoping, that this is a hint to her one day running for U.S. President. Overall, her confidence that we will make a change has encouraged not only the  women of America, but everyone who believes a change is needed.

Many other marks in history were made that night, such as Aziz Ansari becoming the first Asian-American actor to win Best Actor in a TV comedy, and Sterling K. Brown becoming the first African-American to win best actor in a TV drama. All of these events made up one night that will definitely go down in history and as some see it, change the future.
