Anyone who knows me well knows that I absolutely adore scary movies. I watch them enough to where I’m pretty much desensitized to all gore, and I often find myself bored if they’re predictable or cliché. However, I love when scary movies mess with your mind and really make you think about life. So if you’re looking for a good movie to watch on a creepy, rainy night, look no further; here are five that you should try:

Hush. Hush is a movie that I cannot recommend enough. The story is about a woman named Maddie Young that lives alone in a forest, miles away from any neighbors. As if that wasn’t difficult enough, she’s also deaf and is unable to hear her friend being murdered on her porch. In this suspenseful game of cat and mouse, Maddie must do everything she can to survive with no phone, no internet, and no sound. While I won’t give away the ending, let me just say that it’s amazing and might shock you. This movie is far from the typical horror movie.

Don’t Breathe. This is another movie that is a must see for those who enjoy suspenseful and creepy films.  This is a film about an elderly veteran who is blind and lives alone. In addition to all of that, his daughter was killed, and because the murderer got away with it, the murderer’s family simply paid him off. This is the reason that a group of thieving young adults decide to rob him. Seems pretty screwed up, right? Feel bad for the guy? Well, you won’t anymore when you find out the whole story and are introduced to what’s in his basement.

Saw. I’m sure that we’re all familiar with the Saw movies, but can I say just one thing? The first Saw movie was amazing, and the twist at the end? Insane. For those of you who don’t know, Saw is the first of a series of eight movies (some are better than others, trust me) about a killer named “Jigsaw” that traps those who have committed sins or crimes and have gotten away with it. He traps them in a game and gives them the option to live if they make it past certain sections or challenges to survive. It does have quite a bit a gore, but if you like that kind of thing, it’s perfect!

Dead Silence. If you’re freaked out by dummies and dolls like me, then this movie is great for a good scare. This is a story about a man named Jamie whose wife is murdered after receiving an unlabeled package containing Billy, a creepy dummy. Jamie soon finds out about the story of Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist who was murdered after the town thought she kidnapped and killed a child who made fun of her ventriloquism skills. While she may be dead, her soul is still very much alive and she has vowed to kill any descendants of the little boy, including Jamie and his family. Yeah, it’s pretty terrifying and actually managed to make me freak out a little.

Pet Sematary. While by today’s standards, this might be a bit of a bore to some people, I still think it’s a classic that still has the same creepy effects today that it did in the 80s. If you’re unfamiliar with Stephen King, this is a story about a family who moves to a new home close to a local pet cemetery where children bury their pets who have passed. That’s not the creepy part though; beyond that, there is an ancient burial ground that will bring back animals – and humans as we later find out – from the dead. The only problem is that it comes with a price and they don’t come back quite the same as they were. If you’re a sucker for classics or are interested in Stephen King, you should definitely check this movie out.

While I know this list only contains five of the greatest horror movies, and there are plenty of other amazing movies out there, I still think they are worth trying or watching the trailer for. Trust me, you’ll have no trouble finding a killer movie.
