On Saturday, October 14, German soccer team Hertha BSC followed in the NFL’s footsteps, spreading the movement. To bring awareness toward discrimination, this soccer team had it’s starting lineup take a knee on the field, along with the coaches and the rest of the team on the sidelines, just before the game. “We wanted to make a stand against racism,” Hertha captain Per Skjelbred said after their game. Many of the players like Salomon Kalou had witnessed discrimination in soccer. “It shouldn’t exist in any kind of event, in the NFL or in the football world, soccer as they call it there. It shouldn’t exist in any sport, period,” Kalou said when he acknowledged that they were inspired by the NFL’s protest against discrimination. “We stand against racists and that’s our way of sharing that. We are always going to fight against this kind of behavior, as a team and as a city.” This was all started by former 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick back in 2016, who took a knee to bring attention toward police brutality.
