At the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1st the worst mass shooting in modern American history occurred. On the 32nd floor of the Resort and Casino, Stephen Paddock, a 64 year old American citizen from Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire on a crowd of 22,000 people attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival. After the chaos subsided, more than 500 people were wounded, and at the time of this writing, 58 people were confirmed dead. Despite the high number of dead and wounded, it has been determined by the Las Vegas police that the shooter was a lone gunman, and that he was the sole person involved. Stephen Paddock ended his own life before the Las Vegas Police got to his room. Still, there is no clear motive that has been determined in his random attack on the concertgoers.

Despite the common belief that an attack like this is generally perpetrated by international terrorists or their organizations, the FBI has stated that there are no links to any terrorist organization. President Trump will visit Las Vegas Wednesday, and has called the attack “An act of pure evil.” Oddly enough, gun stocks went up and casino stocks went down following the attack, perhaps due to fear of changes to the second amendment or fear of an active shooter following the attack. These arguments could be especially bolstered by the fact that Paddock had passed all of his background checks and was in possession of almost twenty firearms in his hotel room. In spite of this, his family claims to have no idea what drove Stephen to do this, though he likely has a history of psychological problems and his father was a prolific bank robber in the state of Arizona and was on the FBI’s most wanted list. The investigation, however, is ongoing.
