September 21, 2017
On September 10, 2017, a mass murderer shot and killed eight people in Texas, including his wife and best man. Shooter Spencer Hight, 32 years old, killed his 27-year old wife, Meredith Hight, along with seven of the couples’ friends. Oddly enough, Monday, September 11th would have been Meredith and Spencer’s wedding anniversary, but the two had separated in March. According to BBC News, the police said the gunman had died after being shot by a responding officer after gunfire was exchanged.
Seven of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and two were brought to the hospital. One passed away. On Tuesday, September 12th, the other victims were identified by the police as Myah Bass, 28, Anthony Cross, 33, Olivia Deffner, 24, James Dunlop, 29, Caleb Edwards, 25, Darryl Hawkins, 22, and Rion Morgan, 31. Carly Shockey was the only one to survive the attack. Mr. Dunlop was the couple’s best man and Mr. Morgan was a groomsman.
“We’ve never had a shooting of this magnitude. We’ve never seen this many victims before,” reported Gregory Rushin, Plano Police Department Chief. The group of friends were reportedly watching the Dallas Cowboys at Meredith’s home when the violence occurred. CBS News reported that Meredith’s mother stated that her daughter had filed for divorce because of alleged physical abuse and Spencer’s drinking problem.
