Trump Will Outspend Obama’s Travel Budget
April 18, 2017
If Trump continues to spend as much as he is on travel, he will outspend Obama’s entire eight-year travel budget in his first year.
This is a result of Trump’s frequent travels to his Palm Beach resort in Florida. The jet he travels on, the Air Force One 747, is the main contributor in the spending that is quickly racking up. Per hour, this jet costs almost $140,000, and when combined with the number of trips he is making, including lodging and other expenses, each trip adds up to $1 million for the government. To date, Trump has spent six weekends — and a total of 21 days — at Mar-A-Lago, his private Palm Beach club. The total estimated costs for those trips are around $21.6 million. Obama, by contrast, spent just under $97 million on travel in his eight years as president,
These enormous costs are being met with much outrage and backlash. Representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona states that “For someone who complained about President Obama traveling a lot, he’s going to supersede President Obama’s travel, all eight years [of it], within a year, which is just absolutely ridiculous.” Many people are also going to social media to voice their complaints, with many saying how Trump needs to massively cut his spending.
After many complaints and concerns, the Government Accountability Office agreed to look into all of the expenses.
