On January 1st, gas prices in Mexico went up from 14% to 20%. Before the new year, gas stations were full of car owners waiting to fill their tanks before prices shot up. Social workers, transportation workers, people of opposite parties, and citizens protested everywhere. It was reported that there were protesters in 28 of the 32 Mexican states. Protesters held many signs with the expression “Alto al gazolinazo” which means,” Stop the high gas prices.”  Some of the protests have turned very violent.  Around four deaths and about fifteen thousands have been arrested.  Huge crowds blocked some of the most important highways and streets and most importantly, gas stations. Not to mention that light and water bill prices have also gone up. Most citizens that live in small pueblos need to drive to the nearest cities in order to go to work and that wastes a lot of gas, but they can’t afford gas. Protests are still are going on. Citizens are left wondering when they will be taken into consideration.
