January 26, 2017
Here at Sahuaro, we the students and faculty, take great pride in our Fine Arts programs. Whether you want to learn to play various instruments, sing, draw or act there are classes that fit your skill level.
Art:
Sahuaro offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes. You learn to paint, draw, sculpt, print, how to do calligraphy, make books, and many more techniques depending upon the class skill level. Each year you build on the foundations of the program. In intermediate you learn to realistically draw, have a visual journal, create life-size artwork, and have opportunities for more self-motivated artwork. In advanced, you work on your own independent artwork and create your own portfolio, which can be submitted to colleges.
Theatre:
Sahuaro offers a beginning, intermediate, advanced, and director course. Beginning requires no audition. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of acting and play production. You will learn how to use your voice, stage management, and will participate in an original monologue and a written one act. Intermediate includes learning stage tech and how to apply stage makeup. You participate in a children’s show, skits, and a one-act play. Advanced requires an audition. There is off campus touring, competing in Arizona State competitions and festivals. Introduction to Directing needs teacher permission and is only open to advanced theater students. The student directors learn advanced stage directing and work with their beginning class and direct a one act play.
Choir:
Choir offers a mixed beginning, girls (Choraliers), and Advanced Mixed Choir. Beginning Mixed requires no audition. You learn how to sing and read music. You will make many friends and there are no written exams and little to no homework. Choraliers demands an audition to be in. There you learn fun music and create a sisterhood family. In Advanced Mixed Choir you bond with you choir family, and learn interesting and fun pieces. At the end of the year there is a school trip.
Orchestra:
There is an Intermediate Concert Orchestra, Advanced Orchestra, and Chamber. In concert there are no auditions required. You play from many eras and genres. You go to clinics, trips, and festivals. They are looking for violin, viola, cello, and bass. In Advanced Orchestra you have to audition, but get to play advanced music that is fun and challenging. In Chamber, the highest level class, you play with just stringed instruments. This is also the smallest class of orchestra. “As the president of Orchestra, I have been in orchestra for four years. I think it’s really important for a student to learn an instrument. Music has been my saving grace for the last four years of high school and I really recommend it,” stated senior Nora Thompson.
Guitar:
At Sahuaro we offer two guitar classes a beginning/intermediate and an advanced class. Intermediate requires no auditions. You learn to play and read music. You also learn chord progressions, tabs, and music theory. You will play classical and popular music. In advanced you will perform outside of class. You will do solos, duets, and trios, etc. You must audition.
Band:
Sahuaro offers Jazz Band, Concert Bands, and Marching bands. Music is proven to increase test scores. Our program is recognized as one of the best. We take trips to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Beach Bonfire, and Dinner Cruise.
Piano:
There is a piano class at Sahuaro where you learn to play on keyboards. You learn chords and beginning theory. You learn at your own pace and will learn to play fun pop songs and some seasonal songs.
