On January 16th, the Sahuaro Cougars and the Salpointe Lancers faced off in an instant classic in the historic McKale Center located on the U of A Campus.

The Cougars (12-4) and the Lancers (13-6) both showed incredible heart and skill in the MLK Classic matchup, but it was Sahuaro’s Brendan Gary that truly showed out. In addition to being named MLK Classic MVP, he also threw down a thunderous two hand dunk after stealing the ball.

The game ended in dramatic fashion. Trailing the Cougars by 1 point with 11 seconds to go, a Lancer player drove hard to the basket and was met by Brendan Gary, resulting in a controversial foul call and the eventual game-winning free throws for Salpointe.

Despite the setback, our Cougars quickly bounced back with a victory against Sunnyside.
