On Thursday, January 23, Sahuaro’s band students attended an opera performance in Phoenix, Arizona, at Symphony Hall. The Opera, La Boheme, was performed in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles. The performance ran for 2 hours and 30 minutes with a 30-minute intermission to give the audience time to digest the spectacular scenes they had just witnessed. There were nothing but good performance reviews from those who went to watch the opera. It was something to remember forever, as it is one of those things that you should see at least once.
The story that Sahuaro’s band saw follows the tragic love story between Rodolfo, a poor poet, and Mimi, a seamstress, set in 19th-century Paris. They live a bohemian lifestyle with their artist friends Marcello and Musetta while struggling with poverty and harsh life realities and also facing the challenges of Mimi’s declining health. La Boheme continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its unique melodies and mixed emotions.
Mia Payette, a senior who went to the performance said, “It was different but it was a very great experience because they sang the whole time and there was a pit orchestra and I loved to see that.” The story was very dramatic and full of sadness; many attendees said it should be seen at least once.
Marie Jennings, a junior, went to the performance as well and said, “It was very confusing but I liked trying to understand it after a while.” Operas are beautiful and are meant to be appreciated while watching them and to contemplate following the performance. The Sahuaro band had a great time and really appreciated the experience.
