On Tuesday, December 3rd, junior Cisco Llamas, #0, scored his 1000th point in a game against Sahuarita High School at home in the McConnell Gym. The Cougars won that game with a score of 93-48.
Cisco made varsity his freshman year of high school and has been in the starting line-up since he began practicing at Sahuaro the summer after his eighth-grade year. Head Coach Henry said, “Yeah he’s been starting since the day he walked into the gym…he took the starting point guard job about one week into that summer.”
1000 points is an achievement often not reached until senior year, so for Cisco to achieve this early on in his junior season is remarkable. Although the coaches were unsure about the exact number of students in the program to ever reach 1000, Coach Wharram estimated it would be around 10, making Cisco a member of an elite club. However, he isn’t stopping here, and by the end of his senior year, he wants to have scored 2000 points.
Cisco went into the game thinking, “I wanted it. I just knew what I had to do.” However, it didn’t come without work. “I started off a little rough, you know, 0 for five from three, and then finally…got that.” The crowd roared as he reached his 1000th point, generating a vivacious atmosphere. “It was a good feeling. I really liked the environment. All the fans supporting me, my family, my friends, everything.” And to achieve this goal at home was, “…way more meaningful.” His family was there to support him, always pushing him to do his best.
This has been a great season for him so far, aside from overcoming an injury, and he shares a common goal with the rest of the Cougars – to make it to State once again. Cisco says, “We’re going to finish what we started from last year.” The boys made it to the State Championship finals but fell short by two points against Deer Valley.
“From his beginning as a freshman playing varsity to where he is now, he’s really taken on a leadership role. You know as being one of the captains of the team, that’s been one of the big things is taking on that leadership role. He’ll lead by example, but also just sort of leading by talking and helping out,” Coach Henry commented. Cisco will play a big part in getting the boys to State this year by leading on and off the court.
The team is currently 13-1 this year and has been exciting to watch. Come cheer them on as they work towards the state championships and watch Cisco on his journey to 2000 points!
