Senior Sirena Flowers is a friendly and outgoing presence here at Sahuaro. She is involved in school sports and clubs such as volleyball, Cougar Link Crew, and BSU (Black Student Union). As someone who is always ready and willing to try new things, staying involved comes naturally to Sirena, making her a RISING FLOWER!
Sirena was the libero on the Sahuaro varsity volleyball team, one of the sport’s hardest positions on the court. Managing to make varsity as the libero while only having two years of volleyball experience is an incredible feat because of the talent it takes to be a great passer. However, she got so much experience from playing club volleyball after her school season, which helped her tremendously. Sirena said, “Playing volleyball was an amazing experience I had and I am so glad I ended up playing it.”
To know Sirena you must know where she came from because it is quite the story. Sirena is a native Tucsonan, raised by her mom, two siblings, and her cat Roxie. Every Sunday she goes to her grandmother’s house and cooks dinner, which has been an ongoing tradition for many years. Sirena’s mother always makes it a point to always go to her house no matter what. Sirena said, “Keeping that tradition alive of visiting my grandmother has always been very important to me because I feel it has made me who I am today.” Her grandmother was born and raised in Mexico, meeting Sirena’s grandfather at a bar, falling in love, and then running away to America where they had their first son. They moved often because her grandfather was in the military. Finally, they settled in Tucson and a generation later, Sirena came along with her siblings. Her brother is a student here at Sahuaro and they are very close with each other. Her sister is a couple of years older and just had a baby, making Sirena a young aunt, which she loves.
Sirena will pursue a degree at the University of Arizona, majoring in Forensic Psychology. She took a psychology class in her junior year of high school and was very intrigued by it. Traveling and succeeding in her career is something she wants to do in the future. Sirena said, “On vacations, I really want to travel to Greece and Iceland during college and after college.” For right now, Sirena wants to live every minute of her senior year to the fullest.
