While Sahuaro senior Maggie Boyd was in her freshman year at Catalina Foothills, one of her childhood friends invited her to an open gym for basketball. Maggie said she was bored and had nothing else to do, so she attended, and after that, she never stopped going.
“I didn’t initially fall in love with basketball. I did really like it, and honestly, I sucked, but I stuck with it. I didn’t want to stop till I got good at it.” This 6-foot-tall senior enjoys basketball more than volleyball because it challenges her more. “I have more of a drive to play basketball because of the aggression in the sport and it takes more energy and it requires a lot more focus,” she explained.
Maggie is very excited about this upcoming season. Although she’s not close with all of the girls, she still strives to maintain a good relationship with them. Her goal for the team this year is to have a higher win percentage than losses, and her personal goal is to score more and take the ball to the basket.
Maggie has also played volleyball since her sophomore year, quitting her junior year, and then picking it back up her senior year. She was on JVB her sophomore year, but after her year-long break, she showed up for summer volleyball before her senior year and was put on varsity due to her natural talent. “During my break, I didn’t do anything related to volleyball, and then I just showed up over the summer, and he said he wanted me on the team.” Looking back on the past volleyball season Maggie says, “This season was long but I learned a lot. I met a lot of new girls – they were all so nice. It wasn’t my sport, so I wasn’t really into it as much as others, but it was fun, but I just wouldn’t do it again.” Maggie plays middle and right side in volleyball. She ended her last volleyball season with 212 attacks and 18 blocks.
Maggie does not see herself pursuing her sports in college but plans to play club basketball outside of college. She will be attending the U of A, and although she is still unsure of what she wants to do, she knows she would like to study something very hands-on and science-related.
Maggie says she doesn’t have any big inspirations like other people, but rather she has negatives she wants to stay clear of. She also does not have any grandiose goals, but she just wants to be happy when she is grown. “For myself, I just want to be happy and work my way to find that happiness, whether that be money, a family, or even a nice place to live. I don’t necessarily have money goals but I have a happy goal.” Maggie is very hard-working and tenacious. She is very friendly and, loved by all her friends and coaches.
