A day at Sahuaro during homecoming consists of hall marches, pep rallies, and tailgates.
During 1st and 2nd periods, the band led cheer and color guard through each hallway, performing a ‘hall march’. Band students played pieces such as Land of 1000, Band Yell, and our school’s fight song, while cheerleaders and color guard members did their respective dances. All classes were invited to open their doors to hear the wonderful sound of the Sahuaro spirit.
After the 3rd period bell, students were to report to their classes, drop off their bags, and head to the McConnell Gym for the pep rally. The marching band then performed more of their music as students entered the elementally decorated gym.
This year’s pep rally included a multitude of groups performing, including the cheer squad, Black Student Union, and the Dance Club. Cheer performed a dance/stunt routine to the songs, Hit the Quan, Juju on That Beat, $$$, and Humble. Black Student Union performed an original step routine. Lastly, the Dance Club was going to perform to a BLACKPINK remixed version of the song B-Better Have My Money, but due to unforeseen circumstances, their performance was moved to halftime of that night’s football game.
In between each performance, there were engaging activities such as learning how many days of school until your class graduates, teacher limbo, dodgeball, and a relay race for representatives of our fall sports teams, where students ran and popped balloons against a partner.
In the middle of the pep rally, each fall sport was called into the middle of the floor to do their team’s ‘Cougar chant’. Football, cheer, golf, swim, girl’s volleyball, and cross country were recognized.
Split seconds before the last performance of the day, members of the junior class section exploded a bottle of baby powder. The pep rally was immediately called off, resulting in the dance club’s performance being rescheduled. All students were promptly sent back to their 3rd periods.
Despite a hitch at the end of the rally, it was one of our most successful. This elemental-themed rally showcased an extensive range of different skills required for each performance, such as strength, rhythm, and perseverance.
Our 2024 homecoming dance theme was elements, just like the pep rally. Each grade had a different one: seniors were fire, juniors were water, sophomores were earth, and freshmen were air. Despite a small turnout, plenty of students still had an amazing time at our dance after the game. Kids like Anabelle and Hailey really knew how to make the most of it!
This dance wouldn’t be possible without Student Council’s hours and days of tireless yet thankless effort.
