With after-school activities kicking off, science teacher/podcaster/guru, Mr. Rutherford, has opened up the meditation club for anyone who needs a moment of peace and relaxation, even teachers! Meetings are being held every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:25 to 3:45 in room 100. He hopes to help the Sahuaro community manage the stress and anxiety the new school year brings and help everyone find calm within themselves.
Mr. Rutherford said that many people he’s talked to say they don’t have the time to meditate, but he heavily disagrees, “The more time you put into meditating, the more time you have for everything else in your busy life. The meditation will help clear your mind and help you focus on just taking things one at a time.” He also said, “It’s not something you have to strongly commit to. It works the first time, every time.”
The meditation club started around two years ago when all of us were adjusting to life out of the recent pandemic. Students weren’t used to being back in school and even with the hybrid schedule, everything was still awfully rocky. Mr. Rutherford saw the huge spike in stress and his students’ inability to focus and decided to take action. Since the start, his main goal of the club has been to help improve students’ ability to focus and help them let go of their worries.
The meeting begins by getting into a relaxing position, with your hands resting on your knees and your body leaning back into your chair. Then Mr. Rutherford gives a teaching about learning to be yourself without judging yourself. Nya Brown, a freshman who attended the meeting said, “I would say it was just really calming; it opened my eyes to a lot of problems I’ve been having.”
While the club has had a slow start, he hopes to have more students come in soon, as everyone is adjusting to their new schedules and starting to get more involved with the school. He invites anyone with just a little bit of time after school to come in and join their growing community; you’ll be able to learn more about meditation club at the club fair on September 1st!
