The Summer I Turned Pretty is about a teenage girl named Belly who is caught in a love triangle between her childhood friends, Conrad and Jeremiah, who are also two brothers. She hopes to limit who gets hurt while dealing with her first love and first heartbreak during her summer break. In the show’s 2nd season, there have been huge debates on who is the better brother for Belly and who will always be there for her in happy and sad times. Jeremiah has shown time and time again that he is willing to listen and be there for Belly no matter what. Unfortunately, there is not much Conrad has done for Belly but break her heart over and over again…and we know how girls always seem to go for the jerks. However, she’s had a crush on him since she was a little girl. In the first season, we find out why Conrad was treating Belly horribly, but does that give him a pass?
However, the book and the show are very different, so they might change the characters and how they act, but Conrad has many problems that he needs to resolve. Still, many aspects of the show are not in the book like the Debutant Ball and the characters in the first season of the show.
The main question we should all be asking is why Belly is going from brother to brother. It’s morally wrong of her to be doing this to them because Conrad and Jeremiah are her family’s friends, so anything that she does can also impact the family in a very negative way. They care very deeply for each other, but Jeremiah and Conrad love Belly romantically no matter how hard they try to hide it, which pits the two brothers against each other. Jeremiah has always been there for Belly, whether she was with Conrad or not. Conrad, however, has been very selfish in the show and showed no remorse when he started dating Belly at the beginning of the season, knowing the way his brother felt about her. This love triangle is now affecting their comradely bond which they need more than ever because of their mother’s terminal illness.
Belly knows who she wants, but chooses not to express how she feels until the very last second; that hurts not only her but Conrad and Jeremiah too. I believe the mood of the first and the second season definitely changed because of the music. Whenever Belly would look at Conrad or Jeremiah we could just tell how she felt because of the song they chose to play in the background. Through Taylor Swift tracks and lots and lots of tears, The Summer I Turned Pretty: Season 2 doesn’t necessarily recapture the magic of the first season, but neither does it mean to. Regardless of the music and how the first and second seasons differ, Belly wants a great relationship, and Jeremiah is the clear choice.
