Title 42 Is Coming To An End
May 12, 2023
For those of you that don’t know, Title 42 is, “The section of the Public Health Service Act of 1944, that allows the government to halt the entry of people and imports in order to prevent the introduction of a communicable disease from outside the borders of the continental United States.”
This was implemented during the extremely bad parts of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020. It was set in place to give border officials the right to turn away migrants quicker. This helped to limit the spread of Covid-19.
It worked efficiently for a few years when it was used on occasion, but the CDC now says that they can, “No longer authorize Title 42 because of improving pandemic conditions, including increased vaccination rates.” Meaning, border officials cannot keep denying people for the reason that it is protecting the country from the spread of disease.
This title ending also means that more and more migrants will be allowed to pass through the border while waiting for approval. Therefore, more people will be placed in holding facilities. With a lot of people now coming through the border on the daily, these facilities will fill up fast. More people will start to suffer because of the lack of shelter and food that is able to be provided.
A lot of people have their own opinions on this subject and in the end, Title 42 being terminated on May 11th is the result. But is that truly best for the migrants?
We will have to see if people think being able to come through the border, and have a fair chance at going through the full process to get approved or not is worth having to live inhumanly for longer periods of time while letting this process play out.
